Since my son and I are obsessed with Skulls and Sugar Skulls, we have decided to do his room in a "skull theme". The walls are light sky blue with white trim and white and black furniture with black, green, blue and white accents/décor. One of the awesome DIY projects we came across on pinterest, was Sugar Skull Flower Pots. I thought this was a wicked thing to make for Alix's room. Here's what I needed and how I did it.
Items Needed:
- Clay Flower Pot - as many as you want to do - purchase from Dollarama or any Dollar Store for around $1-2 each or for packages of 2-3 pots.
- Clay Flower Pot Trays - if you want them, if you plan on putting real plants in them - purchase from Dollarama or any Dollar Store for $1 for a package of 3 pot trays
- Acryllic/Latex Paint Bottles/Tubes - Whatever colors you want from Michaels for $1-3 each or from the Dollarama/Dollar Store for $1-2 each for a larger tube.
- Modge Podge Clear Matte Glue Seal - Michaels for $4-6 depending on the size of the bottle
- Thin Paintbrushes - $1-6 a pack at Michaels, WalMart or Dollarama/Dollar Store
- Optional: Paint Pens - $6 for a 2 pack at Michaels
- Optional: Sponge Applicator for Glue - $0.25-$1.00 at Michaels
Total Cost: $5.00 and up depending on amount of pots and paint needed to purchase
Instructions:
- Begin by painting your clay pot and tray any color you wish. I painted three of mine white and painted one in black. Make sure you let dry for about 10-15 minutes in between coats. You`ll need at least 3-4 coats. However, acrylic on clay dries very fast.
- Using a paintbrush or sponge applicator, apply thin strokes of modge podge clear glue all over the entire pot and optional tray. Make sure it is completely dry before application.
- Let the Modge Podge dry for about 15 minutes to be safe.
- Next, using a thin paintbrush or paint pen and your choice of paint color, apply various sugar skull designs to the pot. You can use ideas from a Google Search simply by typing in ``sugar skull``.
- Let dry for about 15-20 minutes and then apply another thin layer of Modge Podge then let dry for another 15-20 minutes.
And there you have it. Sugar Skull custom flower pots. Once you`re finished designing them, you can put fake plants or a real plant inside. You can purchase fake plants from Dollarama or WalMart or real plants from just about any department store.
Have Fun and be Creative!
